I don't really mean the plot itself - Outlast 1 does a good job of acquainting us with Murkoff and the effects they've had on Mount Massive.

This can be especially seen in the second half of Genesis, as well as Judges and Leviticus.ДЄnd then you have the story. The atmosphere in Outlast 2, in my opinion, plays with the player far more in regards to silence and soundtrack, subtly manipulating the player and when they should be terrified, lulling them into a sense of false security and whatnot. Or how a thin, terrifying choir is used in addition to a howling woman whenever Marta shows up, and this motif is saved for when she is on-screen. I believe Outlast 2 improves on this through its familiar usage of motifs, for example the song that plays in the school, and how it shows up multiple times whenever Jessica's presence in Blake's mind leaks into the real world. I also believe the atmosphere is improved in 2, and this can be especially seen in the school sections. Then Judges which may be the best chapter in the game, with how unique it is in how you're constantly trying to ascend the tower to get to the elevator, with the constant switching back to the school and being pursued by the Heretics. One of the best sections in the game is when you're stuck in the forest and have to evade them by strafing around them, and after this it leads into them shooting at you from afar. This isn't even getting into other chapters - Job has a lot of great sections with Nick and Laird, all of them utilizing different aspects of their nature. lots of varied, unique scenarios with different enemies and different layouts. Then you have the cornfield section, the chase with Corgan and the executioner, the Marta section with the cart-pushing, etc. In Genesis alone, we're treated to a lot of really nice, open sequences with multiple villagers hunting for you and plenty of houses to search and hide in particularly I am reminded of the first real Marta section where you have to give power to the elevator. Outlast 1's environment is almost entirely hallways, with exception to the courtyard, the sewer, and the underground lab.Д¬ontrast this with Outlast 2, which in my opinion has far more dynamic and unique sequences. In the second half of the original Outlast, the settings begin to feel samey, particularly once you get back inside after the courtyard - from this point to Father Martin's death, the only memorable places I can remember are the theatre and the large break room (is that it?) where the lone Variant stares out the window. I definitely prefer the setting of Temple Gate and its surrounding areas over Mount Massive, particularly because Outlast 2's setting allows for a lot more creativity and memorable sequences. I believe it's superior to the original for three reasons: the setting, the atmosphere, and the story.

I love the entire series - but Outlast 2 in particular is just about perfect in my eyes. It's one of the most iconic indie horror games ever made, and I think Outlast deserves to be recognized as one of the most important horror games, up there with the original Resident Evil games and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. That's not the say the original isn't fantastic. After replaying all of the Outlast games for like the fourth time, I've come to the conclusion that Outlast 2 is not only one of the best horror games ever made, but it improves on the original game and its DLC in nearly every respect.
